The Complete Guide to Loft Insulation
Everything you need to know about loft insulation depths, material choices, airflow protection, energy savings, and installation standards.
Why 270mm to 300mm is the Recommended Depth
In uninsulated homes, up to 40% of space heating escapes directly through the roof ceiling joists. For mineral wool insulation, UK building standards recommend laying a total thickness of 270mm to 300mm across the loft floor.
Typically, this is achieved by placing a first 100mm layer between the 100mm roof joists, followed by a second 170mm or 200mm layer rolled at right angles (perpendicular) across the joists to bridge thermal cold gaps.
The Benefits of Reaching Full Recommended Depth
- Reduces annual heating bill demand by retaining ambient room temperatures longer
- Eliminates cold ceiling spots that invite internal condensation and black mould
- Provides summer solar attenuation, keeping upstairs bedrooms cooler in hot weather
Understanding Loft Insulation Materials
Choosing the right insulation depends on your property age, loft access size, timber condition, and whether you intend to store items in the loft space.
Glass & Rock Mineral Wool
The UK standard for loft floor insulation. Excellent thermal performance, Euroclass A1 non-combustible fire rating, and cost-effective.

Highly breathable natural fibre roll that absorbs and releases airborne moisture naturally without losing thermal value. Ideal for period homes.

Insulation holds heat inside your home, which means the unheated roof space above becomes significantly colder in winter. Warm, moist air rising from bathrooms and kitchens into the loft will condense against cold roofing slates unless air flows freely through the eaves.
Eaves Vent Baffles & Lap Vents
When installing thick 300mm insulation near the outer roof pitch, eaves vents must be fitted to prevent the insulation roll from choking eaves airflow gaps.
